5th Summer Harvest

Hello🙋🏼
Kind of a late post but I harvested Tuesday and Wednesday of last week💚
I was able to send about 12 lbs of basil to Blair-Shannon!!!!
Pesto, purple, and fine verde basil...oh my
Wowzers.....that’s a bunch of basil!!!
As you can see the plants are growing very good...well...except the cilantro
With the rising temp in the grow room the cilantro started to bolt.
With no way to control the temp or humidity in the grow room these kind of things happen😞
Even with hydroponic growing if you can’t control these things you’re limited on what you can grow and I highly recommend being able to control these very important aspects if you’re thinking about investing in this system.

☀️Summer☀️

Hello All You Wonderful People🙋🏼
🌱Progress in the grow room 🌿
💚Our little baby plants are growing up🥗
It amazes me how fast plants grow in a hydroponic setting.
Being able to control the environmental conditions such as light, temperature, nutrient availability, and humidity sure make up for an easy summer of growing!
I don’t have to pull weeds out around the plants or combat pests in the
summer elements❌☀️🐛🦗🐿🐇🌧❌ and that’s a huge plus!
Work smarter...not harder👩🏼‍🌾
🥗Before long it will be time to harvest a couple different varieties of basils and cilantro for
Blair-Shannon🌮

HARVEST DAY!

Good afternoon everyone,

Happy Monday! Hope everyone is having a wonderful day...and enjoying this beautiful weather!

Personally, I am having a great Monday because I got to harvest this morning!! My hands (and the Kentwood kitchen) smell like herbs, and it’s awesome! I am very proud of our totals this time around, and I wanted to share them with you. 🌱

Basil ... 4.25 pounds
Cilantro ... 4.13 pounds
Dill ... 2.25 pounds
Parsley ... 2.15 pounds
Chervil ... 2.3 pounds
Shisho ... 0.5 pounds

That’s a total of 15.5 pounds of produce delivered to dining halls and the PSU today!!!

Just to give an idea of how much that really is, if you were to put that in your cart at the grocery store it would cost you around $500!

WOW.

Add that to the fact that they’re 10 times fresher and prettier than what you can buy at a store, and it’s absolutely incredible.

Have a wonderful week!

Out & About On Campus

Hey y’all!

If you were walking to class through Bearfest Village yesterday, I hope you stopped to check out the Sustainability Showcase put on by the College of Agriclture! The Green Team wanted to be a part of this event, so we had one of our grow towers on display for students to check out. There was a lot of interest, and we are excited about pushing for ever-increasing sustainability on our campus.
Go bears! 🐻

There are events continuing this week for the Public Affairs Conference, so we encourage you to attend some of the sessions and learn something new about being sustainable!

Fri-Yay is Harvest Day!

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you are enjoying this spring weather as much as I am! Today I had the privilege of delivering the produce from the first major harvest of the semester, and it was a beautiful thing to see 💚 🌱

The oils from all of the herbs have my hands smelling like dill, basil, cilantro, & happiness. 😃

Our produce totals for this week were the following:
Kale (.5 pounds)
Dill (.85 pounds)
Basil (.5 pounds)
Cilantro (.5 pounds)
Chervil (.5 pounds)
Parsley (.25 pounds)

The produce was harvested this afternoon, and delivered within 30 minutes to both the Blair-Shannon and Garst dining halls... Talk about fresh!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone,
Rachel 👩🏼‍🌾

The Plants Are Coming, the Plants Are Coming!!

Hello everyone!

It's hard to believe that the semester here at Missouri State is almost halfway done... Anyone else ready for spring break though? 🙋🏼 I've had the privilege of being in 75 degree weather surrounded by new life every day here in the growing room. 🌱☀️ Sounds like spring doesn't it?

Well, have I got exciting news for you! Coming soon to a dining hall near you,
🌷 SPRING! 🌼
(The closest we can get to it with this crazy Missouri weather anyway...)

Jennifer and I have been prepping for weeks, and are finally ready to move some of these beautiful babies to new homes.

We're so excited to show you what we've been up to! Expect to see lettuce, kales, basils, and a variety of other green goodness popping up in the dining halls in the coming weeks. And as always, enjoy your campus-grown herbs and greens!

Have a fantastic day!

New Team Member

Hello everyone,
Jennifer Rice here. I'm new to the Green Team working with the hydroponic zip grow towers on campus. I'm currently a senior at M.S.U. I'm working on dual degrees at moment - a Bachelors Degree in Envionmental Plant Science with a Horticulture emphasis and Natural Resources. I've had some experience in the hydroponic field, and love to grow plants hydroponically. I hope to help Rachel grow delicious locally grown food for all you lovely folks. Cheers to a great semester!

A New Semester!

Welcome back, fellow bears! 🐻

Hopefully everyone is staying warm - it's days like today that I'm especially thankful for my job. Rachel here, with a quick update from the Green Team! 🌱

Even though it's 5 degrees outside, the Grow Room is coming alive again. At a balmy 73 degrees, our babies are loving life! Sad to see these towers empty, but we are excited for what's to come, and planning for another successful semester.

Also, I am happy to announce that we will have a new member joining our team, so stay tuned for an intro!

Until next time,
Rachel 👩🏼‍🌾
